Frequently asked questions about loan refinancing in Switzerland
How does refinancing work? When is it worthwhile, and can you receive extra money? Find the main answers here.
What does refinancing a loan mean?
Refinancing means repaying your existing loan with a new one. It covers the amount still needed to settle the loan, not the amount originally borrowed.
The aim may be a lower rate, a more suitable monthly payment or combining several loans. You can also request extra money paid into your account. The new lender must approve the financing.
When is refinancing worthwhile?
Refinancing is financially worthwhile if the total remaining costs are lower with the new loan. Comparing offers is particularly useful if your current rate is high.
The key factors are the rate, outstanding balance, remaining term and new offer. Improved employment or finances may also help you qualify for better terms. Always compare the total cost, not just the monthly payment.
How much could I save by refinancing?
Savings depend on the outstanding balance, the difference in rates and the remaining term.
Simplified example: CHF 30,000 repaid over the next 48 months.
Existing loan | New loan | |
|---|---|---|
Effective annual interest rate | 9.9% | 5.9% |
Monthly payment | approx. CHF 753 | approx. CHF 701 |
Remaining interest costs | approx. CHF 6,162 | approx. CHF 3,651 |
The saving is approximately CHF 2,511 over the entire remaining term.
Calculated with equal monthly payments, without additional charges or insurance premiums. Rates are illustrative and do not constitute a binding offer.
Can I reduce my monthly payment?
Yes, through a lower rate, a longer term or both. With the same term, a lower rate reduces both the payment and interest costs.
A longer term eases your monthly budget but can increase total interest. Mutuo therefore considers your preferred payment, the costs and approval prospects.
Can I repay my loan early at any time, including by switching banks?
Yes. Personal loans covered by the Swiss Consumer Credit Act can be repaid early. For other agreements, the contractual terms apply.
Mutuo assesses refinancing for personal loans from all Swiss banks, including those outside our partner network. The new lender must approve the financing. You can refinance again later if the applicable legal or contractual conditions are met.
After how many months should I have my loan reviewed?
Our rule of thumb: review your terms once you have paid at least twelve monthly instalments. Earlier refinancing is possible, but lenders are often more cautious about a quick switch or an increase in borrowing during the first year.
After twelve payments, there is a longer repayment history. Based on our brokerage experience, this is a useful time to compare offers. It does not guarantee better terms or approval.
How much does refinancing with Mutuo cost?
Mutuo’s entire service is free: advice, comparisons, brokerage and refinancing support. We charge no fee even if your application is declined or you do not accept an offer.
For the new loan, you pay the agreed interest and, if selected, the premium for optional payment protection insurance.
How does refinancing with Mutuo work?
1. Apply: provide your current bank, approximate outstanding balance and any extra amount requested.
2. Send documents: we generally need identification and proof of income.
3. Review the offer: it shows the amount, rate, term and monthly payment.
4. Settle the loan: after signing and the applicable waiting periods, the new bank pays the settlement amount directly to your current bank.
Any approved extra amount is paid into your account at the same time. Mutuo supports you and explains the next steps.
Do I need a settlement statement from my bank?
You do not normally need to obtain one. For the initial application, your current bank’s name and approximate outstanding balance are enough.
The estimated settlement amount is calculated using available loan data. We will tell you if a statement or further details are exceptionally required. Your previous bank’s final statement may still show a small amount to pay or a credit balance in your favour.
What happens to interest already paid and future interest?
Interest for the period already elapsed is generally not refunded. For loans covered by the Swiss Consumer Credit Act, early repayment removes interest for the unused period. Corresponding costs must be reduced appropriately.
You therefore do not pay all the interest originally scheduled until the old agreement ends. The sum of remaining instalments does not automatically equal the settlement amount: it includes future interest.
Can I combine several loans?
Yes, if the new bank approves the total amount required. The existing loans are repaid in full. You then make one monthly payment to one bank for those loans.
This makes them easier to manage and may reduce interest if the terms are better. Tell us the banks involved and approximate balances. Mutuo assesses suitable consolidation options.
Can I refinance credit card debt and keep my card?
Yes. A personal loan can repay outstanding card balances. Comparing is particularly useful if you pay interest on balances carried forward, as card rates are often higher.
You can generally keep using your card. Settlement alone does not change its limit; the issuer’s terms still apply. New card spending adds to your loan payment commitments. We assess instalment purchases and other unpaid bills individually.
Can I use a loan to buy out a car lease?
Yes, this may be particularly attractive if you want to own and keep the vehicle.
The leasing company’s terms and binding buyout offer are decisive. The price may differ from the contractual residual value. Mutuo assesses the financing. Whether it is worthwhile depends on the buyout price, new loan costs and the alternative of continuing the lease.
Can I refinance and receive extra money?
Yes. Refinancing with additional borrowing also provides an amount for you to use freely.
Example: CHF 25,000 for settlement plus CHF 5,000 extra means a new loan of CHF 30,000.
Enter your request under “Additional amount paid into your account”. Once approved and after the applicable waiting periods, the extra amount is transferred at the same time as the settlement payment.
What if the bank approves less than requested?
If the approved amount covers full settlement, you may receive an offer with less extra money.
Example: you need CHF 30,000 for settlement and want CHF 10,000 extra. With CHF 35,000 approved, CHF 30,000 settles the loan and CHF 5,000 goes into your account.
If only CHF 25,000 is approved, it is not enough for full settlement. Refinancing will not proceed, and your existing loan continues unchanged.
What requirements and documents are needed?
You must be at least 18 with a sufficiently stable income. The new lender assesses your financial situation and ability to repay.
We generally need identification and recent proof of income. Initially, also provide your current bank and approximate balance. A Swiss debt enforcement register extract is not normally required. We will tell you if the bank requests further documents. Personal loans are generally granted without pledged assets or a guarantor.
What refinancing rate will I receive?
Your rate is set after assessing your finances and requested loan. The advertised minimum does not automatically apply to every applicant.
Mutuo considers suitable partner banks with competitive rates. The lender must also approve the required settlement amount. The aim is a suitable offer in terms of cost, amount and repayment. Your personalised offer sets out the terms before you sign.
How quickly is my application reviewed and refinancing completed?
Mutuo often reviews documents within hours. With complete documentation, the bank normally replies within 24 hours during normal business operations. Further checks can take longer.
Allow a few weeks overall for settlement. New cash loans covered by the Swiss Consumer Credit Act have a 14-day withdrawal period. Processing may take longer before holiday periods and public holidays. Apply early, especially if you need extra money by a specific date.
When do I start paying only the new bank?
After disbursement and settlement, you are notified by email or telephone. You can then stop the old standing order and make regular payments to the new bank.
You receive new payment details. The first instalment is usually due the following month; the new payment schedule is binding.
Your previous bank normally sends confirmation or a final statement. Any small remaining balance must be paid; a credit balance is refunded. If no statement arrives, contact your previous bank.
What happens to my loan insurance?
For monthly payment protection insurance, ongoing premiums cease after settlement according to the contract. Cover does not automatically transfer to the new loan.
Payment protection insurance for the new loan is optional. Compare benefits, covered risks, exclusions and monthly premiums. Mutuo answers your questions about the options offered.
Why refinance through Mutuo?
Mutuo assesses offers from several partner banks and supports the refinancing process. You have a dedicated contact without coordinating offers and settlement on your own.
We consider rates, the amount, your preferred payment and approval prospects. Several loans, card balances and extra money can be included. Our service is free. You review the offer and decide whether to sign.
